Impact of migration mothers on the left behind school age children’s education performance: A case study in rural areas, Sri Lanka
Kanthi Manel, D.P.
With a high number of migrant mothers as domestic workers and engaged in other employments in the Kurunegala District as
in other districts of Sri Lanka, information on the education performance and welfare status of their left behind children
reminds the need for a proper intervention. This study examines the key factors that affect the education performance of left
behind school age children whose mothers have migrated. The study was conducted in Kotawehera, Rasnayakapura and
Polpithigama Divisional Secretariat areas which are the high sending Divisions in Kurunegala District. An interviewer
administered questionnaire and case study method were used to gather data. Univariate and multivariate analytical methods
were used to analysis the data. Findings of the study reveal that the demographic and socio-economic profile of the migrated
mothers and the children left behind are related to age, marital status, religion, educational level, income and expenditure and
poverty. The study shows that nearly 60% of the children are female and 40% of the children are male, out of which 54% of
the children are at the age of attending primary education. Further, the study has found a significant relationship between the
migration of mothers and the impact on the education of the children who have been left behind. The marks obtained by the
children are not significantly related to the teachers at their schools, but is related to the status of the migrant families at home.
The roles of guardians and caregivers at home do not successfully help the children attain their education, physical and
psychological well-being. Given the situation in the families where the mother has migrated, the fathers and elder people who
stay at home should be responsible for the care and protection of the children left behind by their mothers.

Abeyrathna, A.W.G.N.M.; Wijesinghe, M.A.S.
This article stresses the importance of spatial factors for entrepreneurial
orientation of rural entrepreneurs, rendering a critical review of existing literature. Even
though the social system and institutional context have been regarded as highly important
in the entrepreneurial orientation of rural entrepreneurs, the spatial context is also equally
important. Thus, the hope is that the paper would show avenues for the exploration of
spatial factors affecting entrepreneurial orientation to the potential researchers.

The present status and role of the Thurusaviya Rubber Societies in the smallholder rubber sector in Moneragala District: Extension Officers’ perception
Gunarathne, P.K.K.S.; Tennakoon, T.M.S.P.K.; Edirisinghe, J.C.; Mahindapala, K.G.J.P.
The farmer-based organization known Thurusaviya Rubber Societies (TRSs) has been
established by the Thurusaviya Fund (TF) for the development of the smallholder
rubber sector. This study attempted to assess the present status and role of the TRSs in
the smallholder rubber sector in the Moneragala District. The views of 18 Extension
Officers (Rubber Development Officers and the two district Coordinating Officers of
TF) with over five years of work experience were used to create two focus group
discussions by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Approach. The perception of
the key entities (Organizational structure, Organizational culture, Function of the
organization, External environment and Intervention of organizational development)
responsible for the development and welfare support for the rubber smallholders was
assessed. Data were analysed qualitatively as a case study in Moneragala.
Results revealed, that the majority of TRSs considered in the study were not performing
well due to factors such as poor leadership, lack of transparency, lack of enthusiasm
of members, lack of trustworthiness, attitudes of members, the role of the Field Officers
and changes in the external environment and politics. The contribution from the
management unit and the membership was greater in TRSs that were highly active than
that of the poorly active TRSs. The self-reliance capacity was low in the majority (99%)
of the TRSs and was highly dependent on Extension Officers involved and the
Government’s assistance. The majority of TRSs were not goal-oriented and under
performing and not dynamic in organizational performances. Hence, extension and
development agents feel that critical intervention is required to overcome the above
weaknesses. Therefore, organizational development should be done by concerning;
goal orientation, need identification, the interaction between Field Officers and TRSs
and guiding the TRSs, restructuring of organizations, offering compensation for the
management unit, development of physical resources and developing as business
entities to achieve their goals and objectives.
