Destination Image Perception of International Tourists: The Case of Sri Lanka as a Tourist Destination
Wijethunga, W.M.H.U.; Warnakulasooriya, B.N.F.
Tourism is considered as a growing industry in Sri Lanka and constitutes a major contributor to
the Gross Domestic Product. However, with the high competition among destinations
worldwide, the image held by travelers on a specific tourist destination is of high influencer to
select alternative tourist destinations. Despite the importance of positive images for
destinations, more recent literature acknowledges that there is a dearth of research on the
influence of nationality on interpretations of destination imagery. Therefore, this study is
designed to address the research question of whether the nationality a tourist has any significant
impact on the perception they hold on Sri Lanka as a tourist destination. The major objectives
are to assess the nature of image perception (IP) of tourists in Sri Lanka and to examine whether
image perception varies in terms of the country of the tourist. A single cross sectional research
design is employed to collect data through a self administered questionnaire. The unit of
analysis and the proxies are the international tourists to Sri Lanka. A sample of 223
international tourists, who came to Sri Lanka during April and May, 2014 has been selected.
One way ANOVA was performed to examine the differences among the perceptual evaluation
of tourists on the destination image. The analysis shows that the destination image perception
varies according to the nationality of the tourists. The implication of this research can be used to
develop the tourist marketing mix to suit the image perception of tourists.

Factors Affecting the Adoption Decision of Voluntary Environmental Management Systems in the Apparel Industry in Sri Lanka
Hemchandra, D.W.K.
Textile and apparel industry represents41% of total export earnings and 52% of industrial
export earnings in Sri Lanka. There are about 350 BOI registered textile and apparel
manufacturing factories located islandwide including 16 textile and fabric manufacturing
firms. The textile and apparel factories produce sportswear, lingerie, loungewear, bridal wear,
safety worker’s wear, swimwear, childrens wear. Apparel manufactured in Sri Lanka are
considered as high quality, reliable, socially and environmentally accountable. Specially, Sri
Lankan apparel manufactures are considered as pioneers in environmental friendly apparel
producers in the world.
Therefore, the study aims to examine the factors that affect the adoption decision of voluntary
environmental management practices among textile and apparel manufactures in Sri Lanka.
Using a pre-tested, and structured questionnaire primary data were collected from 55 factories
randomly in the Western province. Volunatry environmental management practices are
considered as the dependent variable and regulatory pressures, buyers pressure, competitors
pressure, and firm’s characteristics are considered as the independent variables. I measure the
effects of each independent variable to the adoption decision based on Poisson Model
estimation. The study found that factory chracteristics and buyers pressure are the most
significant factors for the firms to adopt voluntary EMS.

Impact of Perceived Work-Life Benefit Usefulness on Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) the Mediating Role of Perceived Organizational Support (POS)
Wijewantha, P.; Sangarandeniya, Y.M.S.W.V.
This study proposed and tested a model that links perceived work-life benefit usefulness with OCB
based on the Social Exchange Theory (SET), and it also proposes that the direct relationship is
mediated by Perceived Organizational Support (POS). SET supports the possibility that perceived
usefulness of work-life benefits would promote employee OCBs as workers may feel obligated to exert
„extra‟ effort in return for „extra‟ useful benefits. The study was designed to investigate why the female
school teachers of international schools do not demonstrate desired OCBs. A significant positive
relationship was found between perceived work-life benefit usefulness and OCB and that relationship
was partially mediated by POS. The study is done among 212 female teachers of international schools
located in the Western province of the country. Data were collected using an anonymous selfadministered
questionnaire filled by the teachers and their respective officers-in-charge. Data were
analyzed using SPSS version 17.0 where simple regression analysis was used to test the direct
relationship and four step three regressions approach was used for the mediator test. This study is of
immense significance for the managements of non-governmental schools as they require high levels of
employee commitment to ensure quality of service to the satisfaction of students and their parents to
face the competition amidst the large number of such schools in the country at present. Though the
potential to produce the desired effects is obvious, research is yet to address the issue in the present
context, and this study fills that void in research.

Maximizing Business Benefit in the Context of Globalization Role of Government, Employers, Global Actors and Female Employees
Karim, M.R.
Global market is open for all to maximize profit and accelerate business where a
country necessitates knowing the details about opportunities, business strengths and
fixing strategies in order to get the competitive advantages competing with other
copious factors and potential multiple actors. Bangladesh is much exposed to the
global market and encourages private sectors, especially readymade garments industry
emerged in 1980s. According to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (2010) this sector
has become the second largest export-oriented industries significantly contributing to
the national economy. The high rate of unemployment in Bangladesh creates an
abundance of cheap labor that attracts foreign buyers. Although globalization has
brought some negative aspects, it also comes with myriad possibilities for socioeconomic
benefits as benign effects. In order to maximize profit and business
advancement, globally exposed businesses largely depend on fixing the strategies of
business, meeting the employment standards, adhering to government rules and
regulations, understanding and exploiting global market and meeting the demand of
global actors. This paper is developed based on secondary data collected from
journals, books, reports, World Bank publications, national and international daily
newspapers, and annual publications of different ministries of Bangladesh. Literature
suggests that three major parties i.e. the Bangladesh government, employers and
foreign buyers try to gain maximum benefit from the global market. The Bangladesh
government has enacted public policies for investment for both foreign and local to
utilize huge unutilized workforce for economic development of the country.
Employers take the advantage of government policies and cheap labor. Foreign buyers
also demand special provisions from government and competitive price in the market.
The ultimate issue is the working people in the central focus who build the triangular
relation and contribute in this sector. However, they are ignored as they are poorly
paid, forced to work in bad working conditions, and not provided proper facilities
according to labor laws. The objectives of this paper are to examine the role of the
above mentioned actors and contributing factors, how working people, women in
particular are utilized and exploited, and to find out the effective bargaining
mechanism for greater benefit.
