<description>The Role of Human Resource Management in Developing Tourism Industry in Sri Lanka: A proposed conceptual framework
Gamage, A.S.
Tourism is a fast growing industry in Sri Lanka. Since gaining independence from the British in 1948, Sri Lanka has continued to attract foreign investors and tourists to the island. However it is the post war period that the sector has featured prominently a rapid growth. The arrival of tourists increased rapidly and passed the elusive one million mark in 2012 and increased further in 2014 and 2015. Consequently, the tourist earnings also increased and now the sector occupies the position as the third largest foreign exchange earner to the country after overseas remittances and textiles and apparel exports. It is expected to increase the number of arrivals up to 2.6 million by 2020. However, as a growing sector in the economy this sector faces several challenges and Human Resource Crises have been the top among others. The shortage of well-trained tourism personnel coupled with high rate of turnover continued to be a major issue for the industry with the situation worsening with many new hotels coming up in the country and absorbing the existing experienced personnel. Therefore, the broad objective of this study is to examine the role of Human Resource Management in finding suitable solutions to assist the industry to deal with HR issues successfully. In fact, as the first phase, this study attempts to develop a research model for action. Specifically, this study is designed to examine the role of Human Resource Management (HRM) practices in developing tourism sector in Sri Lanka and to propose a theoretical model that can be used to embark on a study to measure the real impact of HRM on the performance of tourism sector in Sri Lanka. The proposed model suggests a significant correlation that exists between HRM practices and firm performance in tourism sector. Further, the model will help better understand the missing link through which HRM practices will make the impact on firm performance in tourism sector in Sri Lanka.

<title>Employee Green Performance of Job: A Systematic Attempt towards Measurement</title>

<description>Employee Green Performance of Job: A Systematic Attempt towards Measurement
Arulrajah, A. A.; Opatha, H.H.D.N.P.; Nawaratne, N.N.J.
Though there is a growing interest among academicians and practitioners in respect of green aspects of Human Resource Management (HRM) there is a gap in the theoretical as well as empirical knowledge about environmental related job performance of an employee in an organization. A systematic review of literature reveals that less attention has been paid in valuing, developing, measuring and making use of employee green performance of job by the organizations even though this phenomenon exists in practice. The objectives of this paper are: to introduce a key concept called „employee green performance of job, to define it nominally, and to identify key dimensions of the concept for the purpose of measuring it in reality based on systematic review of literature. Our attempt resulted in identifying three key dimensions and eleven elements which will be useful for developing an instrument to measure the concept.

<description>A Pilot Study on Burnout Syndrome: Its existence, causes and coping strategies practiced by medical professionals in Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Sri Lanka
Kathriarachchi, M.; Rowntree, G.
Burnout syndrome among doctors causes increased turnover, decreased job satisfaction, depression, anxiety, frequent medical errors and patient death. Main aim of this paper is to identify existence of the burnout syndrome, underlying causes and analyze the coping strategies practiced by medical professionals of the Teaching Hospital, Colombo South (CSTH).&#13;
The review of definitions elaborated the most accepted definition of the syndrome as one consisting of three dimensions namely emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). Individuals scoring positive on EE and/ or DP dimension regardless of scoring positive on all three dimensions of the syndrome are considered as undergoing burnout syndrome related to work. Method used for investigating burnout syndrome was a deductive approach with a quantitative survey strategy. The survey hosted three questionnaires. First questionnaire was self – administered and validated by the authors and attempted to identify the causative factors of the syndrome. Instrument 2 - MBI – HSS validated by Samaranayake and Seneviratne (2010) was used to assess the prevalence of the syndrome among medical professionals practicing at CSTH. Coping strategies questionnaire developed and validated by Ellawala (2010) was used to measure the strategies currently practiced among medical professionals. Data collection through surveys was conducted among a sample of randomly selected 100 medical professionals.&#13;
Findings illustrate that workload depicted in terms of private practice; gender and high personal contact nature of the work are not associated causes of the burnout syndrome. Long work hours, heavy work load, marital status, having less time to spend with family / friends, unpleasant work environment, unpleasant relationships with colleagues, having low autonomy at work and risk of major failure or patient death were recognized as associated causes of the burnout syndrome. Proportion of the syndrome was 53%. Of the study sample, 30% individuals scored positive on EE dimension, 24% scored positive on DP dimension and 24% scored positive on PA dimension. When considering the most popular coping strategies practiced in stressful situations, it was reported that listening to music, obtaining emotional support from family / friends and seeking comfort in the religion respectively. Another finding that contrasts from the major studies illustrated that 92% of the medical professionals in the sample never practiced harmful coping strategy of substance abuse for mitigating stress.

<title>Towards a Sustainable Future: Reflections</title>
<link>http://dr.lib.sjp.ac.lk/handle/123456789/11124</link>
<description>Towards a Sustainable Future: Reflections
Opatha, H.H.D.N.P.
Sustainability came as a very vital issue in front of all of us and this paper is about sustainability presenting some managerial reflections in addition to some of the vital sustainability research findings from world studies done by recognized international organizations. Sustainability has to be considered as a mandatory requirement due to the reason of avoidance of numerous detrimental effects of operations of business organizations and the dangers of narrowly pursuing maximization of profits. If one does a careful examination of the barriers to sustainability and sustainability issues and practices it does reveal that HRM plays and will have to play a critical role in making an organization sustainable. Based on the Triple Bottom Line that is the most popular one among the several sustainability-related paradigms, it is possible to integrate sustainability into HRM resulting in three dimensions such as Green HRM, Social HRM and Strategic HRM.
